Federal Per Diem Rate Increases for the Charleston Area
For Immediate Release, August 2007
On Monday, August 6, 2007 the General Services Administration announced the new federal per diem lodging rates for 2007-2008 year. The Charleston area will be moving from $98 per night to $137 per night. This is a significant and welcomed increase for area hotels that host government groups and meetings. In 2006, the rate dropped to $78. The local hospitality industry called on Congressman Henry Brown and Senator Lindsay Graham for help. The rate was then raised to $89 for the remainder of 2006. In 2007, the rate began at $92 and currently is at $98.
“This is a great improvement for our local industry and economy. Our research shows that meetings and groups spend more money while visiting our area and we look forward to welcoming the federal government and assisting with their meeting needs,” said Dan Blumenstock, President of the Greater Charleston Hotel/Motel Association (GCHMA). Members of the GCHMA Board have held three meetings with the GSA since 2005 when the first drop in rate was announced.
